Building new tunnels under the ground is usually a very slow and difficult job. For many years, companies have used giant machines with metal teeth to cut through hard rock. These machines are expensive, and they break easily when the ground is too tough. However, new technology is changing how we create space beneath the earth. Instead of cutting the rock, scientists are now using heat to melt it.

A new company has developed a special tool called a plasma torch. This torch is much hotter than the sun’s surface. When the torch touches the rock, the extreme heat causes the stone to turn into liquid or gas. This process allows engineers to create tunnels much faster than before. They do not have to worry about the metal tools wearing out or getting stuck in deep layers of the earth.

There are many reasons why we need these new tunnels. First, experts want to put electricity lines underground. This protects the power grid from bad weather like storms or fires. Second, some companies want to build data centers deep in the earth. Computers inside data centers produce a lot of heat, but the natural cool temperature of the ground helps keep them at the right temperature. This saves a lot of energy and is better for the environment.

This technology is also useful for clean energy. Some engineers are using these plasma tools to reach hot water deep underground. This heat can be turned into electricity. In the past, it was too hard to dig deep enough to find this energy. Now, melting the rock makes it possible to reach these places safely. Although this technology is still new, it could soon make our cities more efficient and help us use more natural power from the planet.
